I found it convienient to analysis at least three music videos of bands with a similar genre to the band; The Cure'. This is because it enabled me to focus on the key areas that make a music video successful and visually pleasing. I chose to analyse Queens Of The Stone Age's 'No One Knows' music video as I thought the concept they used was interesting as it resulted in a moral insight that is only loosly based on the lyrics.
In Queens Of The Stone Age’s music video for ‘No one knows’, the narrative is shows an event that is a loose metaphor for the tables turning in relation to karma. The video shows a dark interpretation of what the lyrics mean, as well as embedding humour into it. In relation to the humour sides, the bands are shown to be quite relaxed as the animals shown are purposefully shown to look fake.
To show this karma aspect of the lyrics, the band chose to show it in relation to the characters swaping lives with a deer, where the new equillibrium' of the story shows the charaters heads on a wall on a plaque just like is stereotypically the fait of run-down deer, and the deer that was originally hit leads a normal life fit for a person which shows him finding love.
To show the bands legitimacy, the video shows many shots of the performers themselves playing so the audience can clearly see that the music is their own. The person playing drums in this video is David Grohl, famed for being the drummer in Nivana and Vocalist in the Foo Fighters, this promotes the band, as fans of David Grohl’s two perious bands will see him in the video, and this may entice them to look into Queen’s Of The Stone Age. In 2002 Queen's Of The Stone Age used David Grohl as the drummer in their 3rd albam 'Songs for the deaf', this made their albam seem respectable to music enthusiasts as someone who has been in the business a long time helped out; this may have contributed to why this albam was concidered their most successful.
As well as switching from the storyline to show the band actually playing, the three longterm members, Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri and Mark Lanegan appear as charaters in the narrative part of the video.
The background of the video is misty looking, which adds to the mystery of the lyrics; 'no one knows'. The director of the video was Michel Goudry who did many music videos for Björk who is renound for her quirky style. This could further premote the band if some audience mebmbers are fans of Goudry's work.
